About this class:

Have you ever dreamed of developing your own fabric print and making your own furnishings, wallpaper, or stationery, or admired a dress and wondered how such a beautiful all-over print was created?

Learn to create your own seamless repeat design with Julia!

In this course, focused on textiles, Julia will guide you to develop your own ‘repeat pattern,’ ready for printing on fabric.

You do not need to be ‘artistic’ to join this class. Julia can show you how to turn a simple line doodle into a fabulous seamless repeat print. We will focus on creating an artwork suitable for an online print ordering platform such as Spoonflower, where you can upload your print and create your own interior furnishings, fabric, or even wallpaper.

Julia will guide you through everything you need to know to get started in surface + fabric print design. You'll leave the class with knowledge and your very own creation.

Leave the technical aspects to Julia, who will digitalise your creation for professional fabric printing. Leveraging her commercial design and digitalisation knowledge, Julia will bring your illustrative artworks to life in repeat.

You will be provided with an assortment of illustrative and paint materials and resources to create a simple repeat print of your choice.

What is Repeat Pattern Design?

Often referred to as a "repeat pattern" or "seamless pattern," it is a design that can be tiled or repeated seamlessly across a surface, creating a continuous and cohesive visual effect. This type of design finds common use in various industries such as textiles, fashion, wallpaper, packaging, and digital media.

What you will learn in this class:

  • An appreciation for the intricacies of seamless print design.

  • What a repeat design entails.

  • An understanding of how repeat prints work and their applications.

  • How to source inspiration.

  • Developing simple designs suited to seamless print.

  • Applying simple drawing or paint applications to paper.

  • Introduction to colour theory.

  • Visualizing a demonstration on scanning, digitalization, and positioning of a seamless print.

  • Place into a seamless repeat.

  • Set up for print (this course will focus on Spoonflower expectant specs).

  • Take away resources including simple PhotoShop shortcuts.

Class Duration: 3.5 hours.

Depending on progress on class discussions, there is no guarantee that each print will be finalised before fabric printing, a 'preview' of your print can be emailed to you before production begins.

JULIA SOFTLEY  | CREATIVE DIRECTOR MLM LABEL, ARTIST

Julia's illustrative foundation was developed at a young age, surrounded by craft, textiles, and music, all taught and influenced by her parents.

Julia studied the arts and completed her BVA/FA before transitioning to a comprehensive background in the apparel business and design as a brand manager. This change in her career path ultimately led to the launch of her first label in 2009, marking the beginning of a successful 14-year career in the fashion world. MLM Label, her brand, has been sold worldwide and has been worn by celebrities such as Kendall Jenner, Emmanuel Alt, Tash Sefton, and dozens of global influencers.

Julia has recently revisited her trade of art and illustration. Influenced by nature, colour, and tones, Julia aims to captivate the eye through the creation of her work, favouring tactile materials such as watercolour, Conte, and Gouache.

She experiments with unique techniques to create aesthetically pleasing signatures. Her love for textiles, art, and digital media combines her comprehensive skillset in apparel and design. We are very lucky to have Julia with us at Studio Subi!
